  Profile Hots

Inspiration for this plane came from crazyherb and the idea of making a super sized glow powered 3DX.

Material: 3/4 inch blue foam insulation and blue fan-fold foam. Engine mount is 1/2 inch ply. 5/32 inch dowel spars.
Glues: ProBond Poly GLue and Epoxy.

Step-by-step plans

Hints and tips:

  Low Wing SpadStick

Based on Kraut's great SpadStick design

Material: 1/4 inch white foam board or 4mil coroplast. Engine mount is 1/2 ply.
Glues: CA and Hot Glue

Step 1 (Wing) (or follow Kraut's design for coro version. Use my measurements, though)
Step 2 (Fuse)
Step 3 (Tail Feathers)
Step 4 (Assemble Fuse)
Step 5 (Attach Tail Feathers)

Hints and tips: To get the nice, glossy finish I covered the entire plane in blue sign vinyl.

  Quick Stick 40
Material: 1/4 inch white foam board wing. 1/4 blue foam board fuse. 4mil coro tail feathers. Engine mount was 1/2 ply.
Glues: CA and Hot Glue

Step 1 (Wing)
Step 2 (Fuse)
Step 3 (Tail Feathers)
Step 4 (Assemble Fuse)
Step 5 (Attach Tail Feathers)

Hints and tips:
  • Cutting wedges and folding foam board
  • Finishing the foamboard

I used to spray glossy clear coat or clear laqcuer on the foam board for fuel proofing. I was burning CoolPower 10% with synthetic oil, but recently started using real castor based fuel. This castor based oil is making my planes sticky and is breaking down the clear coat, so I have started using clear packing tape to cover the foam board. This looks good and cleans up with Windex or soapy water. I think I will be sticking with this to cover the planes from now on. If you work the tape with your fingernails, all bubbles get removed and the tape becomes nearly transparent and gives a very nice glossy finish while being much cheaper than the traditional heat-shrink plastic coverings.

  Quick Stick Bipe
This is a work-in-progress project. My desire is to make it look like the Hot Canary, but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. I then found the Hornet by Stangle Technologies, and luckily enough for a short time they had low-res drawings on their website, so I saved them. The interesting thing about that bipe is it looks like a Hot Canary, but the wings are not stagger, which makes setting the CG easier. I decided to use this method of wing placement. The core of this bipe is SpadStick through and through. I used my SpadStick spreadsheet to size it down to a 40 inch span which would work well with a 40 to 46 for sport flying, but put a 51 to 61 and it would should have unlimited vertical!!!

For building material you can use 4 mil coro or 1/4 inch foam board for the fuse and 2 mil coro or 1/8 or 1/4 foam board for the wings.

Step 1 (Wing)
Step 2 (Fuse)
Step 3 (Tail Feathers)
Step 4 (Assemble Fuse)
Step 5 (Attach Tail Feathers)

Here is the drawing of the Stangle Hornet bipe that I used for inspiration:
